Carnival of Personal Finance and a Look Behind the Scenes at TwoWiseAcres

by Mike on October 16, 2007

This week’s Carnival of Personal Finance was hosted by Mighty Bargain Hunter and included Rob’s article “How to do Business With a Friend Without Killing Each Other” as an editor’s pick.

In honor of Rob’s accomplishment, in addition to a links post, I wanted to provide a glimpse behind the scenes at TwoWiseAcres. For those of you that are new to the site, TWA is a two person blog about real estate investing. Rob and I post articles separately and collaboratively. But really, the TWA process is all collaborative.

Take his editor’s pick article, for example. Certainly, this was all Rob at the article’s conception stage, but I believe I left my mark during execution. To better illustrate our collaborative process, I went back to the genesis of this article-Rob’s draft-for a comparison against the final. The title is the first thing that strikes me. The final, of course, was “How to do Business With a Friend Without Killing Each Other”. In contrast, Rob’s original title was “Houses & Friends are Good”, which while capturing the gist of the article, was somewhat vague. In examining the content, I notice that Rob emphasized brevity more than the final edited piece. In fact, as I review it, Rob’s draft was missing much of the content of the final. Actually, it consists of little more than two or three sentences strung together that my four-year old nephew wouldn’t be particularly proud of. Then he follows the “content” with a grammar-school illustration of a house, and finally trails off into what I’m only guessing is the start of Rob’s Christmas list. (See below)

In any event, congratulations, Rob, on this week’s CoPF editor’s pick. Here are some other items that we enjoyed, regardless of how the authors got to their final result:

BeingFrugal has an article about the saving and spending habits of her kids and asks Saver or Spender: Nature or Nurture?

Nick at Punny Money offers some advice on avoiding a scam that I was unaware of, but probably should have been, in Fight Thieving Restaurant Servers with Checksum Tips.

Advanced Personal Finance talks about the joys of Spending Found Money on VCRs and Metallica tapes. Is there any other way to spend found money?

Jim at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity offers 7 Personal Finance Lessons from the Poker Table to make financial planning a little less of a crap shoot.

Finally, as noted last week, TWA awarded its coveted best use of the phrase horny rabbits in a blog post award to Millionaire Mommy. It set off nothing short of a firestorm in the blog community. After many threats of legal action and extensive negotiations, we capitulated to the “requests” of the small, but well-funded organization, Blogs Using the Phrase Monkey Poo (BUPMP) to expand the contest. So, from literally thousands of entrants, this week’s TWA award for best use of the phrase(s) “horny rabbits” or “monkey poo” goes to 1Mil at Millionster for 14 Tips on How to Quit Your Job. Now call of your dogs, 1Mil.

As the quality of my craft here at TWA has achieved international acclaim through an editor’s pick on the CoPF, Mike has sunk into deeper and deeper depression. Frankly, his contributions to this blog have always been marginal, at best. Although it pains me to take this step, I’m afraid TWA is cutting Mike loose and hence forth will be known simply as–One Wise Acre.
