HDR Photos–A Stunning Way to Market Real Estate

by Rob on April 1, 2008

I was first introduced to high dynamic range (HDR) photography about a month ago as I was searching for some photos to include in my personal finance blog. I came across some HDR photos on flickr, and at first wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at. Lately, HDR photos are about all I use anymore because the pictures are simply stunning. So yesterday I noted with interest an article about the use of HDR photos in real estate marketing.

These vivid HDR photographs can be taken with a DSLR camera, but do require software such as Photoshop to process the image. Here are some nice shots I found on Flickr that will give you an idea of what an HDR photograph of a home would look like.

I included the last picture both because it’s such an unusual shot and also to show you that HDR photographs can get a bit weird. Done right, HDR photographs may be a great way to showcase your real estate offerings, but you’ll need to make sure the tones in the image don’t get too spooky.

Those pix are amazing! (Developing a serious case of digital obsession over here…)

On another note– how did I not know you were hanging out over on Dough Roller? I’ve added DR to my reader, but seriously man- you should be chastised for not sharing sooner… ( tisk, tisk)

where have you been? i have been doing this in indy for the last two years… it DOES make a difference!!!!! invest in the camera … take classes…. sell your homes faster… IT WORKS!!!

Connie, I actually started DR almost a year ago. It’s been a real hoot.

Pamela, I’ve been in a cave. HDR photos are really cool, and you can find lots of great examples on flickr.

I wanted to put in my two sense (!) as well…HDR is really not that difficult and I know of a great website that has tons of excellent tutorials, but one specifically regarding this topic:

I do a great deal of photoshop for both my job and my blog and this site is one of the best i have seen although this tutorial might be the best for what this topic is referring to. We will soon be accepting customers to have banner ads created and eventually whole sites, check us out!

Thanks for the interesting post. I had never heard of this technique before, but will use it in the future. The first picture is the best. It looks almost like a very realistic rendering.
