Does Your Real Estate Listing Need A “Second Life”

by Rob on November 16, 2007

There are a lot of ways to market a property for sale or rent. You can hire a realtor, advertise in the newspaper or use one of the many online services. (Mike also has used the sandwich board approach with varying success–both with and without a bell).

Now there’s a new way to advertise real estate for sale or rent–the virtual open house. As reported in November’s Money Magazine, Coldwell Banker recently advertised a real-world Seattle mansion in Second Life. For those who have never heard of Second Life, here’s what it’s all about:

The real estate firm built a virtual replica of the mansion in Second Life that avatars (the graphical representations of Second Life members) could walk through. With a list price of $3.1 million (non-virtual), promotion in two worlds was probably called for. The marketing move brought in 1,100 avatars to view the property.

So, will Mike and I start advertising our slightly less than $3.1 million properties in Second Life? I don’t think we’re there. . .yet. But if you decide to, let Mike’s Second Life Avatar know. You’ll find him wandering around under the name OneWiseAcre.

When Mike does the sandwich board thing - does he wear anything other than the board? That might affect results…

Mike,

You raise a good point. It really depends on how close we are to the next mortgage payment. Perhaps this will be the subject of a future TWA series with some spreadsheet results, and of course, photos.

It was only a matter of time before people started to market real estate in SecondLife. With 100 visits, were there any actual leads?

Joshua, we don’t know if the Second Life marketing of the home resulted in leads or sale. We do know that realtors are using Second Life more and more to market real world properties. In fact, some have opened virtual offices in Second Life.
